Frequently asked questions
Who is this app for?
Winout is for people who want a quick, guided transition from Windows to Fedora, avoiding the tedious steps usually involved in switching operating systems.
Can I use a USB drive?
No. Winout does not make use of USB drives. Instead, it creates a temporary bootable partition on the same disk where Windows is installed.
Will it delete Windows and my files?
Yes. The default wipe-disk option removes Windows and all files on the selected disk. Back up anything you want to keep to another device before you start.
Can I keep Windows?
Not with the automatic option. Custom installation leaves partitioning to you; it isn’t a one-click dual-boot setup.
Will it work on my PC?
Winout automatically checks whether your PC meets the installation requirements and will let you know if it doesn’t.
The requirements are:
- An x86-64 (AMD64) PC running Windows in UEFI mode
- Windows and EFI partitions on GPT disks
- At least 2 GB of RAM
- At least 4 GB of free space that can be freed by shrinking the Windows partition
- At least 18 MiB of free space on the EFI partition
What if the install fails?
Depending on when the failure happens, Windows may still be usable, or your PC may no longer boot if Windows has already been removed. You may then need to install an operating system manually. Before starting, make sure you have a backup and a way to reinstall if needed.
Back up your data first.
Winout is not guaranteed to work. Installation can cause data loss or leave your PC unable to boot. Back up your files to another device and be prepared to reinstall an operating system manually.
